Makes being
different - special!

Spring at last!

Spring at last!

So nice to finally see the sun. After, what seemed like, a very long, wet winter it is lovely to see the spring flowers popping up everywhere.

We have some fun news in this update.

Firstly there are some delightful pictures below of "Elocin's Gluten Free Goddess."  And info about why we made a goddess.

Secondly, you may want to join the mailing list or join us on Facebook to find out more about what will be happening in October. Details below...

... but first, our Goddess:

At the end of August the Warkworth Wellsford Hospice held its Catwalk Arts Awards. This is their major fundraiser for the year. Local businesses donate all sorts of wonderful things, from the venue to marquees to raffle prizes and the awards. There are 3 Catwalk Shows that are always sold out (or close to it).

There are several categories in the Awards of which Elocin Specialty Foods entered in the Wearable Advertising section. We were delighted to achieve 3rd Place for our first time entering the competition. The thinking caps are on to come up with (hopefully) a winning design for next year.

Where possible we have incorporated the product and packaging we use to construct our design.

The necklace and bracelet are made from dried pasta. The Rigatoni works well as 'beads' and  then a mix of the Fettucine, Tagliatelli and Spaghetti were twisted to make the large 'pendant.'

I tried to make a handbag out of a Tank Loaf but unfortunately due to the delicate nature of GF bread it did not withstand the necessary

treatment and they kept shattering. That did mean I had plenty of Breadcrumbs on hand.

In the end, on the day of the dress rehearsal and judging, I    wove together cellophane bags and labels to make the handbag.

The skirt was made from brown paper, in panels, with photos behind cellophane windows to give the impression of the brown bags that many of our treats are packaged in. With panels of our pamphlets down the sides.

The head piece was skillfully made by my wonderful Mum who is quite the whiz with the sewing machine. It garnered lots of comment about how it wouldn't have been out of place at the royal wedding. It is styled to look like the Nikau logo on our labels.

Spaghetti was used to make the dainty knot on the toe of the shoes.

We have already started to think up designs for next years event. There were some simply AMAZING designs in all the categories. The imagination and skills that went into making the 50 pieces on display were inspiring...from the dress made from teabags to the winner of the Advertising Category that used tongue depressors.

The best part of the event is that the Warkworth Wellsford Hospice raised almost $25,000 which is awesome. They do a wonderful job and need all the help they can get to continue to provide such a great service

Now to "watching this space" come October:

It is Elocin Specialty Foods 10th Birthday in October! There will be all sorts of exciting ways to help us celebrate. Information about what we have planned will be sent out to our e-news subscribers and posted on Facebook, so be sure to email us if you would like to get on the mailing list or be sure to drop by Facebook during October.
